Overview
Vantage Protected-Areas is a standalone API product designed to help users assess whether a given location intersects with protected areas — a key compliance requirement for environmental due diligence workflows.
This API is built to serve users who are specifically interested in protected area validations without the need to run full deforestation or EUDR-compliant assessments. While Vantage Protected-Areas is also integrated into broader solutions such as Vantage-X (our EUDR compliance suite), it can be used independently and at scale.
Product Scope
Vantage Protected-Areas provides an API to:
- Submit a geolocation (either via providing IDs of registered plots or geometry definition as a GeoJSON FeatureCollection object) for analysis.
- Retrieve results indicating whether the location intersects with any protected areas.
- Get detailed metadata about intersecting areas, including IUCN categories, local-language names, classification type, and source authorities.
- Understand whether extractive activity is allowed in each overlapping protected area, including legality labels, conditions, and linked regulations as well as the
most_restrictive_extractive_activity_legalitysummary for each geometry.
This capability is critical for due diligence processes, sustainability reporting, and environmental risk analysis.
Modular by Design
We believe not all customers need the full risk assessment suite. Vantage Protected-Areas is designed to support lightweight integrations for organizations that need protected area checks only — with the option to scale into broader risk assessment products when needed.
Example Use Cases
- Commodity traders validating origin compliance with conservation laws.
- NGOs verifying land use changes near protected reserves.
- Corporations conducting ESG due diligence across supply chains.
API-First and Global
Vantage Protected-Areas is fully API-based and built to integrate into automated workflows. Every attribute returned is validated against the underlying regulatory source to ensure the extractive-activity permissions and citations stay defensible.
Vantage Protected-Areas is part of the OpenAtlas product family. If you’re looking for full EUDR compliance checks (including deforestation, protected areas, and Indigenous lands), please refer to Vantage-X.
